A Look Back on Our Journey
Our journey at Surf Bread Co. began in the vibrant community of Destin in June 2021, bringing with it a cherished 11-year-old sourdough starter. This bakery, nestled in the heart of a bustling neighborhood, quickly became a beloved local sourdough bread maker.
Why Sourdough
We are certified cottage bakers, and our love for sourdough started after watching Cooked on Netflix — a powerful four-part series by Michael Pollan that explores the elements of cooking: Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. It resonated deeply, especially with our founder, Brad, an engineer who appreciated the logic and tradition behind it all.
How It All Began
2014: Brad began baking sourdough every weekend, dreaming of one day opening a bakery.
That same year, he created his first sourdough starter — Jessie, named after his grandmother. Jessie is made with whole wheat and dark rye flour.
2018: We added a second starter — Ella, an enriched white flour version, named after the grandmother of our another founder, Michelle.
A Tribute to Family
Both Jessie and Ella are named after the women who first inspired us in the kitchen — our grandmothers, who taught us the joy of cooking for those we love. Shop our sourdough bread now.
